What is Baby Name Finder?
Baby Name Finder (babys-name.com) is a free baby name generator covering 5,000+ boy and girl names across 15 world languages. It is designed for expecting parents, family members and anyone exploring names — whether for a future child, a fictional character or simply out of curiosity about how naming traditions vary around the world.
The tool is completely free, requires no signup, and runs entirely in your browser. We do not collect or sell user data; the project is funded by display advertising.
How the names are sourced
Every name in our database is drawn from publicly available, authoritative naming registries — not invented or scraped from forums. For each of the 15 supported languages we cross-reference three categories of source:
- National birth registries. Annual baby name rankings published by national statistics offices, including:
- U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) — English (US)
- UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) — English (UK)
- INSEE — French
- INE (Spain) — Spanish
- ISTAT — Italian
- The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), Statistics Netherlands (CBS), Statistics Poland (GUS), Turkstat (TÜİK), the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS), Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and equivalents for Arabic-, Hindi-, Chinese-, Russian- and Portuguese-speaking regions.
- Cultural and historical name dictionaries. Used to surface traditional and less-common names that do not appear in modern birth registries but remain culturally significant.
- Native-script verification. Names in Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Russian are cross-referenced against native-script sources to ensure authentic spellings.
Each name is tagged by gender, by style (modern or traditional), by length, and by popularity tier (top 100, trending 101–300, or under-the-radar).
Our editorial principles
- Cultural respect. Names from every language are presented as first-class. We do not anglicise or transliterate names where the native form is the authoritative one.
- Transparency. We cite our sources publicly so you can verify any popularity claim.
- No paywall. Every name, every filter and every saved-shortlist feature is free. Ever.
- Privacy first. No accounts, no profiles, no name lookups tied to you. Saved shortlists live only in your browser's
localStorage.
Who maintains the site?
Baby Name Finder is an independent project. It is not affiliated with any naming consultancy, religious organisation or government body. The site is maintained by a small team that handles curation, editorial review and product development. We welcome corrections, suggestions and name additions — please contact us if you spot a missing name, a misspelling or a sourcing error.
Limitations & scope
The 5,000+ names in our database are a large and diverse sample but not exhaustive — particularly for languages with rich historical traditions (Arabic, Hindi, Chinese) where authoritative name inventories run into the hundreds of thousands. We prioritise names that are in active use today, with a long tail of cultural and traditional names included for depth.
Popularity rankings reflect the most recent year fully published by each national registry, generally with a 12–18 month lag from real-time births.
